junior thesis part 1- Kvothe

So, for my junior thesis in my concepts 2 class I am doing character designs from the book The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.  It's a great book. You should read it.  Anyway, this is the first set of designs: the protagonist, Kvothe.  The first is of Kvothe as the reader first meets him: as a lowly innkeeper.  However, we later find out that he is actually an awesome guy; that is him being an awesome guy in the second character design.

common character thumbnails

These are character thumbnails for my Advanced Concept Art Class.  We had to do designs for the common characters that populate our worlds.  The first few are bakers, the next are the people who cut the grass on the roofs of the houses, after those there are the glider nuts, and finally there are the bird enthusiasts. :)

Site News: Next week's plans

The last two weeks have been hectic as I had two projects come up back to back. I should have been at the studio today but our I decided to pull an all nighter yesterday so I could come home (back tomorrow though!). As a result, commissions and personal figure projects haven on a slow burn this week. Right now next week is looking clear and I am using the time to prepare my Blindwater and Khador armies.

The reason I am preparing both armies is that I have the intention of returning to my old gaming club The South London Warlords next week. Now that I am settled in terms of my new neighbourhood and career, it is time to start throwing (more) dice. The last few months have been limited to about one game of anything a month so to get a game a week will be great! It's going to be a great opportunity to see old friends, make new friends and maybe discover some new games.

The two armies I will be running will be: my Bloody Barnarbas list from Here, and a new(ish) Butcher of Khardov list. I am still debating as to which version of Butcher I want to run, but for definite I will be using Destroyers and Man O War (I have a strange combo in mind). I will be sharing details of the lists as early next week, as the idea of using Destroyers in Warmachine MKII may seem a little weird to readers out there.

Rest assured I have a plan!

Forge world Phatom Titan & New Event figures 2011

So Forge world have released pictures and limited details of this Springs up coming releases. The primary release is the Eldar Phantom Titan, with rules appearing in Imperial Armour 11. We also know have full shots of this year's event release figures. Apparently visitors will be able to view the new Imperial Armour book in upcoming events.

All figures will be available to buy from next months Forge world open day and in limited quantities at Salute. While I am disappointed that the Astral Claw seems to merely be Retaliator Space Marine I see plenty of scope to use it as an existing character until Forge World release official figures, looking forward non the less to adding it to my growing Tyrant's Legion.

Blindwater Tactica: Swamp Hopping Primer

Thank you for the email Colin and let me apologise to you and everyone else looking for the lack of promised Batreps and Blindwater Tacticas, 2011 has been a very erratic month with a house move and change of career. Now that I know there is still reader interest I will get right back into the chair and start writing articles! :)
Hey, mate, been enjoying your Blindwater blog posts, but I didn't see the battle reports or tactica you mentioned. Do you have a link to those?

I just started Blindwater myself. I'm pretty much going to run the 35-point Barnabas list you posted (save that I only have one Croak Hunter, so Pendrake will be taking the other 2 points). Can you give me some tips? I'm mainly a Cygnar player -- and there are a lot of Cygnar players going Blindwater because they're the exact opposite of what we're used to -- so this whole melee focus is new to me, but you said that you can't run the gators as a blunt melee force, so I'd appreciated any help you can give me.

Have you run Caliban at all? I've heard that he works best in tier, but I didn't have any farrow, feralgeists or Wrong Eye and Snapjaw.

Cheers,

Colin
As a general rule, Blindwater has excellent crowd controlling devices especially when using Bloody Barnabas, that cater to our universal Amphibious rule. While we are a melee centric force in terms of damage out put, we lack the necessary speed to simply rush up the table when compared to Khador. We do have excellent armour (which gets better in melee) and we have great wounds, what we don't have is high speed units. Sure we do have situational speed buffs, but nothing as consistent as a Drakhun under Strakhov's 'Iron Fist' Feat etc. And this is the biggest difference, we should really be forcing our enemy to come to us, not running towards the enemy, we need to lead the enemy into the Bayou...

The swamp hop/drop is the key component of setting up our kills and allowing us to advance our forces in relative safety versus ranged attacks (but not magical and path finders so be careful!). The Swamps however are not just for defensive purposes, they make a great disruptive force when it comes to your enemy's movement phase and that is the crux of a Barnabas swamp hop/drop list is: Disrupt and Destroy

When running the Blindwater force this basic formula applies but is most effective with Barnabas due to his ability to drop additional swamps through out the game:

Observe > Isolate > Engage

Deployment is important for most forces but for the Blindwater, it is the most important due to your reduced numbers (assuming your Bog Trogs start off table). As a Blindwater force you get the advantage of being able to deploy 3 swamp aoe's within 20"of your table edge, use this to create choke points or trap areas where your Bog Trogs can pounce OR where Barnabas can drop swamps down to isolate. Either way, it puts your opponent right where you want them, separated and piece meal. It is at this point that you can commit your fastest and most powerful amphibious units to beat on the enemy ie Gatormen Posse with Blood Thirst (+2 movement) or Blackhide Wrastlers. Now again path finders will ruin your day here as they can by pass your swamps and counter charge you, so remember that the sole mission is to isolate and kill without fear of reprisal.

The Refused Flank ie deploying on once side of the board will allow you to dictate and predict most of your opponents opening moves (especially with the  bonus swamp placements), it also allows you to creates and lure opponents to pounce point for Bog Trogs. You can run skirmishers on the opposite flanks to run interference by harassing artillery or simply creating the illusion that you are pushing an offensive, my Croak Hunters fulfil this role. Bog Trogs are a ferocious unit to field when used correctly, the whole idea of a unit charging from a side with weapons that have 'reach' and 'combined' is a frightening prospect. I have used Bog Trogs to kill light warbeasts, disrupt gun-lines and assassinate casters/solos trying to get through swamps I have dropped. Your opponent will be very wary of such a unit and those who have not encountered them before can be punished severely with a fast caster death. Create the opportunity and use their speed when the time is right.

Ironback Spitters have very nice synergy with a swamp hop as they allow you to pour some offensive fire from the safety of the swamp and can also protect your units from stray blasts. If you consider the set up and points discussed you will find yourself protected from range and almost always gaining the advantage of first charge, after that, it is down to choking you enemy of reinforcements. So as you can see, even though we are a melee army, we need/have the tools to do more then just rush up the board. Blindwater can play the waiting game by hiding in swamps, and is all about isolating and destroying the targets you want. This can quickly turn your enemies numbers against itself as units get bogged down in swamps and combats in front of them. As the old adage goes, divide and conquer. If you get the positioning right and dictate you enemy's movements, he/she will not be able to shoot, charge or reinforce combats which will leave them incredibly frustrated throughout the game.

Calaban, Feralgeists and Wrong Eye will be the subject of another post once I get back from my next assignment, until then thanks for reading.

Privateer Press: No Quarter 35 & Supplies

I had to  do a basic supplies order this week, when it came to my attention that the latest No Quarter magazine 35 and Valachev were out. I am intirgued to read up on valachev and whar Mercenary goodness he can bring to my Khador force, perhaps those new Ogrun Assault Corps? I already have a few mercenary units, but I am always interested in adding new things to my army.

No Quarter 35 is a big one, as it should have the rules for the War Engines and a preview of Wrath (I think). So it's a good opportunity for me to stock pile cash for the future releases. I am very keen to catch a glimpse of any new Khador Warcaster and of course warjacks.

My order has been dispatched and should arrive by end of the week, I might even paint Valachev if my current deadlines finish early.

Wip: Kingdom Death's Preacher Pin-up

So today has been spent working on Kingdom Death's Preacher pin-up which received a general release over the weekend. This model has alternate parts in the form of very delicate hands and a head with/without glasses.

Not wanting to miss out on the extras I opted to magnetise the heads so I can swap as I see fit, something that proved very troublesome considering the size of the figure.

To ensure no damage to the parts during the cleaning stage, I kept the components on the sprues for easier handling and used a very sharp blade to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on fine parts. I am happy to say that on this occasion nothing was broken.

The hammer is a very delicate piece and I would recommend changing the shaft with brass rod, I did not do this simply because I don't have any of the right size in my tool box.

The front cloth is a separate piece and I will applying heat to bend the tips into place and create a more natural look.

A enjoyable build and something that is looking to be an enjoyable paint job too. Doing the eyes through the sculpted glasses is going to be a challenge, but hey if it wasn't a challenge, it wouldn't be fun!

I need to give the figure a quick wash with warm water, then it is off to the spraying room. I am hoping to get a very good start on the flesh tones tomorrow morning, and if I am very lucky, the special plinth I have ordered will arrive too.

All will be revealed...

For the next assignment in my concept art class we had to do a set of  8 props for our world.  This was fun!

Kingdom Death: Preacher Pin-Up, 54mm Twilight Knight & White Speaker re-release

Oh dear or dear. It seems that while I was out on a job this weekend, Kingdom Death had some releases and I missed it! Chief among the releases was a limited (40) re-run of the White Speaker which came with the new packaging and artwork, really a shame I missed that (I have the Box of Death version). They also released a 54mm version of the Twilight Knight Pin-up, KD games signature pin-up girl herself which comes with a new, gorgeous piece of artwork, luckily I did manage to get an order in for that one. Last of all we finally see the release of the Preacher pin-up figure.

I have had my Preacher sitting in the box since last year (picked it up at Salute 2010), and haven't touched it since as there was no art/colour guide at the time. Now that KD games have released the figure I finally have a reference. While I am a little annoyed that there was no artwork with release, I am happy that I have something to work with in the future. This month has been so Warhammer heavy that I am really looking forward to focusing my attention to a single figure, the Preacher figure fits the bill nicely.

Now all I need to do, is decide which head to use...hmm magnets are your friend?

Check out Kingdom Death!

Site News: Warmachine Army for 2011

Things around here have been a little Warhammer and kingdom Death centric recently. Partly this was due to Hordes burn out last winter, but with Wrath on the way (and the beautiful War engines), it is time to start thinking about what I am going to use and more importantly what I will be painting for 2011.

I had a lot of success with the Blindwater list in both play style and painting up until January, where I messed up the paint job on my Ironback Spitter. This week I intend to get it stripped and start from scratch, however the Khador presence remains strong with the new incentive of the War engines.

I have loads of unopened blisters and boxes built for both factions stockpiled from last year and ideally I do want to trim one of those piles down, it's gators vs cossacks with reasons for both equally matched. What I can say though, is the run up to summer gaming is looking suitably Warmachordes.

Badab War: Tyrant's legion - Reinforcements have arrived

The mighty Medusa Siege tank has arrived! In the end I went for the Armageddon pattern Medusa as I prefer the enclosed compartment and also IA10 features a Armageddon pattern Basilisk. This gives me options game wise if I have points to spare as well, which is never a bad thing.

I still need to check all the components for faults etc but I aim to get the bulk of this cleaned and built as this weekend is looking like a no go for model making. Painting wise, I am looking at using a airbrush of some sort on this as I want a realistic and smooth finish to the armour so I can apply weathering agents in the final stages. I still have some research to do (having never used a airbrush before) but I don't mind taking time to get it right.

Badab War: Tyrant's legion - Cornac Commodus

I have decided to lead my growing Tyrant's Legion with Cornac Commodus, a character who did not make it into the Imperial Armour Badab books, but subsequently got a rules release HERE. I have ordered the parts for this conversion and expect them to turn up tomorrow morning, if Forgeworld do decide to release a official figure, I can always ure the conversion as a standard Centurion.

Still waiting on the first of my armour to arrive, so I used the day to look and write army lists (again). My current list is tailored towards 1500pts and I am finding it more Space Marine backed by Imperial Guard tanks, naturally I have the mandatory Auxilia unit, but besides them everything else is power armoured and in transport (must be the internet brainwashing *joke*).

Tomorrow I hope to share the beginnings of my Cornac conversion and the finalised 1500pts list. Also next month will see some Warmahorde goodness, I am looking to start a new army for 2011 gaming and it won't be Khador!

Annecy´s shorts selection!

The selection of shorts of Annecy International Animation Film Festival came out. The oldest animation film festival in the world chose 178 films for the competition (Short Films, Graduation Films, Music Video, Advertising Films, Educational / Scientific / Industrial Films, TV Series and TV Specials) and 35 films out of competition.

Among the 43 films selected for Short Films Competition, at least four of them were in Anima Mundi 2010: The Lost and Found Box of Human Sensation (Germany) by Martin Wallner and Stefan Leuchtenberg, Schlaf (Switzerland) by Claudius Gentinetta and Frank Braun, Something Left, Something Taken (USA) by Max Porter and Ru Kuwahata and Zbigniew's Cupboard (Poland / Great Britain) by Anna Magdalena Osinska. Between the 60 films in Graduation Films Competition, one also were in Anima Mundi last year: Serenade (South Korea) by Lee Han Bit.

Tempestade - César Cabral

But our greatest happiness is in the Out of Competition selection. Between the 35 films selected, three were at the Anima Mundi 2010, and one of them is Brazilian! They are: Babioles (France) by Matthieu Auvray (Matray), Muzorama (France) by Elsa Brehin, Raphaël Calamote, Mauro Carraro, Maxime Cazaux,Davaud Emilien, Laurent Monneron and Axel Tillement, and our Storm (Brazil) by Cesar Cabral. And as a joy never comes alone, another Brazilian also participates in this section: Timing (Brazil) by Amir Admoni.

Feature films selection will be released in March 15th.

Badab War: Tyrant's Legion Update

I finally have my hands on both Imperial Armour 9 and 10 which was a great boost to continuing this project. Despite getting caught up in list writing this week, I have managed to get most of the Tactical cohort done, with the second half not far off (at time of writing they are actually silver and washed, not merely primed). The uniform I have opted for is pure Tyrant's legion as per the image below and so far I am happy with the results.

I will probably include the more traditional colourings ie gold trims to the more senior members of the army like characters, Honourguard or Sternguard. With this portion of the painting reaching completion I need to take a serious look at what to get next week in order to expand. Top of my list is Auxilia Armsmen to bulk up the infantry numbers and get that true mixed force Badab feel, second on my list is a Leman Russ battle tank to again bulk up the Auxilia presence and add some armoured units to the painting line and table in game. I will be getting two Caestus Assault Rams next month but that will be for my pure Astral Claws army (using Codex Space Marines).

The blue pads are a little clean right now, but once the squad is complete with insignias and backpacks I will begin adding weathering textures. The bases are actually really nicely detailed, without being too over bearing so it should make for a simple (and more importantly quick) paint job. Over the months I will bulk this unit to the full capacity of 20 Space Marines.

I am intentionally avoiding Space Marine armour as the Badab release is still fairly fresh (for Forge World). So there is no telling what resin additions to expect this first quarter, also I really wanted to avoid an overly mechanised theme to this army, opting instead for ruthless Space Marines with lots of expendable infantry.

Badab War: Tyrant's Legion 1st Cohort & Retaliators

Hordes of bits arrived these last two days, which meant I could build up the bulk of my Astral Claws contingent. I have used a mix of MK III, IV, V and VII to give a varied look to the squads. The bases are Urban bases from ebay and provide a creative but quick way of basing my whole army. Usually I create my own bases but this time round I want to get these units done relatively quickly.

I am very happy with the bits selection for my Retaliators, they have turned out as brutal as I envisioned (based on art from IA 9), I can happily picture them charging the breach shields raised, taking incoming fire. The MK III and V combo's look particularly brutal, it must be that the armour itself is larger in comparison to more modern designs and the shoulder pads chosen add to the bulkiness.

I am still sourcing parts to finish this Retaliator squad (Lascutter and a few more members) but I definitely want to add another squad down the line.

Both squads are now ready for painting (not including the first five members of Cohort 1) and it should not take me too long to get these two sets done (I am confident that it will still be end of this week), which for me will be a minor achievement considering the last time I fully painted Space Marines. I have started planning what to add next to the growing force, I do want to add some Auxilia to the ranks as extra cannon fodder (and also a break from power armour) or perhaps some tanks such as Rhinos or Chimeras. Hoping to come to a decision end of the week on that one.

Hmm...with Salute round the corner, perhaps I should grab two Caestus Assault Rams...

silly gift wrap practice

Today in class we learned how to make a repeating pattern for our gift wrap project due after spring break.  In class we had to do a practice pattern based off of what we will eventually do for the finish.  The teacher had us do it traditionally by actually cutting and taping the paper together to create a repeatable image.  Last week we were all given specific topics and I got lucky.  I was given "everyday" which basically means I can do gift wrap of anything.  I am doing something along the lines of retro-inspired cute monsters from urban legends.  This practice is just of a yeti eating ice cream and moth-man smelling a flower.  It's not perfect, but that's why it's practice :)

Badab War: Tyrant's Legion 1st Cohort

The Astral Claws/Tyrant's Legion continues. I have started working on the initial five members of my first Cohort. No special or heavy weapons as of yet, but I will probably aim to use my surplus of Pre-Heresy weapons when I do.

The colours are very simple, starting with a chain mail base over white primer, two thin coats gives a fairly smooth finish. Once dry I then apply a medium to heavy wash of Devlan mud, tow more Devlan mud and one of Badab black are applied to finish shadowing.

Finally, once dry Chainmail and Mithril silver highlights are applied to the upper most portions of the armour to represent where light would fall. Once this step is complete, one final wash of Badab black wash is applied to finish the armour.

Most of my bits have now been shipped so my plan of having a couple of squads built by end of week should happen.
